Basic Dog Behavior Modification Rules
If your dog misbehaves, you may need to use dog behavior modification. Although it may seem difficult, it isn’t impossible to learn the basic techniques of behavior modification. If your dog has a mild case of aggression or stubbornness, you can learn to use these techniques yourself. Basically, behavior modification relies on some basic rules. Two of the most important are consistency and positive reinforcement.
Dog behavior modification involves changing a dogs perceptions and attitude. Once your pet shows signs of change, you have to make sure that all your future actions support that change. Simply put, if you are training your dog not to lie on the bed, you should never allow it on your bed regardless of the situation or circumstance. It should always keep off the bed. The same should be done for every other behavior problem such as peeing inside the house or asserting dominance over family members.
The second important rule of behavior modification is positive reinforcement. When a dog acts in a good way, you have to reward it immediately after the good act. Some trainers use food or objects as rewards. You may however, simply use praise. Telling your dog that it is a good boy and patting it may be more than enough for some dogs. Be careful though of reinforcement timing. Giving a reward shortly after good behavior that has been quickly followed by a bad act might simply confuse your dog or reinforce the wrong behavior.
Dog behavior modification is a valuable tool not just for trainers. It can be effectively used by dog owners too. Discover the techniques of behavior modification now and help your dog become a new animal.
